Key Aspects of Web Design
Web design is basically defined as the process of designing a website and writing mark up for a client and it encompasses several skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of the website. The various skills and disciplines contained in web design include web graphic design, interface design, user experience design, search engine optimization and authoring which include standardized code and proprietary software. One should always have knowledge regarding web usability which is the ease of use of a website during the process of web design. If the individual is also mandated with creating mark up, he/she should also be well updated to the web accessibility guidelines. Due to the many aspects of web design, some web designers may work as a team each covering a different aspect although there are some designers who are able to manage all the aspects. Web design is related to web engineering which majorly focuses on methodologies, techniques, and tools that form the foundation for web application development which supports their design, development, evolution, and evaluation.
Web design has many different processes during production and each process uses a different tool and technology which are updated on regular basis by newer standards and software. Vector and raster graphics editor are the mainly used graphic editors editor for creating web formatted imagery or design prototypes. Images in vector graphics are represented by the use of polygons where the image is saved in any vector graphics format such as WMF and PDF. Dot matrix data structure representing a grid of pixels or points of color viewable on a monitor are used in raster graphics and can be saved in any bitmap or raster format such as JPEG and GIF. There are several technologies used in web design including the W3C standards like HTML and CSS. Creating a website during web design can either be done online by the online proprietary tools provided by web hosting companies which are intended for users to build their private site or it can be done by an offline software running on a computer creating pages and then these pages can be published on any host. Web design can also make use of markup validators for checking validity and other testing tools for usability and accessibility to ensure all the guidelines for web accessibility have been met.
A web designer works hand in hand with a web developer in the web design process when creating a website. The web designer focuses on the visual aspect such as the layout coloring and typography of the web page. A web designer should also have knowledge of the markup language which is a system involved in annotating a document in a way that it is syntactically distinguishable from a text such as the HTML and CSS.
